This clinical manual offers essential tools and guidance for therapists of any orientation faced with the complex challenges of assessing and treating a suicidal patient. In a large, ready-to-photocopy format, the book provides step-by-step instructions and reproducible forms for evaluating suicidal risk, developing a suicide-specific outpatient treatment plan, and tracking clinical progress and outcomes using documentation that can help to reduce the risk of malpractice liability. In addition to providing a flexible structure for assessment and intervention, The Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) approach is designed to strengthen the therapeutic alliance and increase patient motivation. Managing Suicidal Risk: A Collaborative Approach PDF

Finally a book written by someone who knows exactly what he says ... and knows how to say it well! All those who want to have a greater understanding of the existential and philosophical implications of suicide SHOULD stop here. The best parts of the book are those dedicated to the explanation of concepts such as "MANAGING" suicidal risk and building a "COLLABORATIVE" approach. Dr. Jobes has explained with disarming clarity concepts related to the sphere of suicide that had always been difficult to understand. Anyone who is about to study suicide or would like to cultivate a greater understanding of it must consider this book as an excellent starting point. Dr. Jobes thanks for this amazing gift.

I am an unabashed fan of Dr. Jobes' work and this book was the kick start for me. He takes the sensitive topics of suicidal motivation, thinking, rehearsal, aftermath, and intervention and manages to provide clinicians of virtually any experience level with new ways of thinking about the suicidal patient's world. The result is a comprehensive, empathetic, and thorough treatment modality that keeps most patients out of the hospital and reduces the imminent, and sometimes seemingly involuntary, drive to at least attempt, if not complete, suicide. The life-supportive gift of time allows patients to find the means, resources, and courage to make better decisions for themselves and Dr. Jobes has provided the framework for identifying the critical psychosocial needs within a relatively brief clinical intervention window. The patient provides the life-saving perspective the clinician then develops the treatment plan around supporting. I have used the CAMS protocol in acute and emergency care settings, as well as in my daily clinical practice with civilians, veterans, and active duty personnel. This book provides a foundation for evidence-based practice in the prevention of suicide and the assessment and treatment of suicidality. Most importantly, Dr. Jobes' method reminds clinicians, and provides the skills, to keep suicidality the focus of treatment when and while the suicidal patient's focus represents a threat to his or her own life.
