Free download PRETITLE The Mansion of Happiness: A History of Life and Death [Kindle Edition] POSTTITLE from mediafire, rapishare, and mirror link Renowned Harvard scholar and New Yorker staff writer Jill Lepore has composed a strikingly original, ingeniously conceived, and beautifully crafted history of American ideas about life and death from before the cradle to beyond the grave.

How does life begin? What does it mean? What happens when we die? “All anyone can do is ask,” Lepore writes. “That's why any history of ideas about life and death has to be, like this book, a history of curiosity.” Lepore starts that history with the story of a seventeenth-century Englishman who had the idea that all life begins with an egg and ends it with an American who, in the 1970s, began freezing the dead. In between, life got longer, the stages of life multiplied, and matters of life and death moved from the library to the laboratory, from the humanities to the sciences. Lately, debates about life and death have determined the course of American politics. Each of these debates has a history. Investigating the surprising origins of the stuff of everyday life—from board games to breast pumps—Lepore argues that the age of discovery, Darwin, and the Space Age turned ideas about life on earth topsy-turvy. “New worlds were found,” she writes, and “old paradises were lost.” As much a meditation on the present as an excavation of the past, The Mansion of Happiness is delightful, learned, and altogether beguiling.Direct download links available for PRETITLE The Mansion of Happiness: A History of Life and Death POSTTITLE

The Mansion of Happiness: A History of Life and Death PDF

The guiding metaphor of this book is a board game -- or more properly, the evolution of a particular game from iteration to iteration.

The game was called Mansion of Happiness. The goal of the game was to reach Heaven -- or the Mansion of Happiness. It encouraged virtues like honesty, temperance and purity. It had its own origin in ancient eastern games of fate and karma. Milton Bradley, the great game designer, based his own The Game of Life on the Mansion of Happiness. But instead of celebrating the traditional virtues, he celebrated the American ones -- Industry, Thrift, etc.

Just as this game has changed through the centuries, so have our views of the passage of life itself. This book tracks the changing views of the stages of life in America.

The book is broken up into chapters, each exploring a stage of life, and America's changing views. In each chapter, the author looks at a couple of thinkers or historical figures. The author explores the historical transition from a cyclical view of life to a linear one.

Highly recommended for the interesting twists and turns of thought and history, for the intriguing connections between apparently unrelated themes, and for a truly thought-provoking look at the questions we ask about life. This book will make you reconsider what it is to live.
By Book Mark
The Mansion of Happiness can't decide what it wants to be. With a subtitle like A History of Life and Death, this book has license to be about, well, everything. Or, in other words, nothing specific.

The beginning at least shows promise with some background info on board game pioneer Milton Bradley and the evolution of what our games tell us about ourselves. And then there's a chapter on breastfeeding. And then one on children's rights and children's libraries. And then a potpourri of subjects such as sex, politics, women's rights, workplace efficiency (?), motherhood, family planning, contraception and cryogenics. I get that we're meant to progress through the stages of life, but very little about one topic links with the next. My recommendation is to forget about discovering any overarching theme, and instead approach this work as a collection of essays.

Nobel Laureate Peter Doherty offers a level-headed guide to all aspects of pandemics-what they are, how they spread, and what we can do to prevent them

Pandemics. The word conjures up images of horrific diseases sweeping the globe and killing everyone in their path. But such highly lethal illnesses almost never create pandemics. The reality is deadly serious but far more subtle.

In Pandemics, Peter Doherty, who won the Nobel Prize for his work on how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells, offers an essential guide to one of the truly life-or-death issues of our age. In concise, question-and-answer format, he explains the causes of pandemics, how they can be counteracted with vaccines and drugs, and how we can better prepare for them in the future. Doherty notes that the term "pandemic" refers not to a disease's severity but to its ability to spread rapidly over a wide geographical area. Extremely lethal pathogens are usually quickly identified and confined. Nevertheless, the rise of high-speed transportation networks and the globalization of trade and travel have radically accelerated the spread of diseases. A traveler from Africa arrived in New York in 1999 carrying the West Nile virus; one mosquito bite later, it was loose in the ecosystem. Doherty explains how the main threat of a pandemic comes from respiratory viruses, such as influenza and SARS, which disseminate with incredible speed through air travel. The climate disruptions of global warming, rising population density, and growing antibiotic resistance all complicate efforts to control pandemics. But Doherty stresses that pandemics can be fought effectively. Often simple health practices, especially in hospitals, can help enormously. And research into the animal reservoirs of pathogens, from SARS in bats to HIV in chimpanzees, show promise for our prevention efforts.

Calm, clear, and authoritative, Peter Doherty's Pandemics is one of the most critically important additions to the What Everyone Needs to Know series.

Respiratory Physiology PDF

This book is phenominal! It is a concise, clear and interesting introduction (and beyond) to pulmonary physiology. Each chapter includes clinical vignettes, indicating the relevance of the topics and thought questions as well as review questions test your understanding of the concepts (well written, detailed answers are provided too! I hate texts that don't provide answers to the questions they pose).

These days it seems that all you need to do to publish a book is include a CD... and so lots of texts are now accompanied by useless CDs. But the CD included with this book is actually useful. The interactive figures that correspond to the concepts discussed in the book really bring to life what is being discussed (a good thing, because in general the lungs are moving as we breath).

I would highly recommend this book as the main go-to for lung physiology.
By S. Weirich
This book does an amazing job of making pulmonary physiology comprehensible. Not only is the text extremely well-written, but the accompanying CD provides an innovative, interactive, and extremely effective way of conveying the inherently difficult concepts of pulmonary physiology. Kudos to Schwartzstein and Parker - this is a unique book that now sets the standard for how pulmonary physiology can and should be taught!

Becker's World of the Cell PDF

I have owned numerous cell biology textbooks, and this series has always been my favorite. This edition, and the 2 earlier editions of this series that I've owned, strikes a perfect balance between technicalities and general information.

One other cell biology text I owned (I suppose graduate level) jumped right into complex material and anyone not already familiar with the basics of cell biology would be completely lost; and it's coverage was extremely technical. Another cell biology text series - of which I owned 2 in the series - had poor diagrams/graphics and was not all that well organized.

"The World of the Cell" series (which recently changed its name to "Becker's World of the Cell") starts the reader off with the basics, progresses slowly and logically, and has very good diagrams/graphics. And while it does discuss technical details, it is not weighed down by them; and the language used is intermediate - they use cell biology terms but don't cram so many into a single sentence that one has to jump back and forth through the text looking up term after term to figure out what a sentence means.

PS: I have both the 7th and 8h editions. I kept notes from the 7th edition and when I look at the same page numbers in the 8th edition, the same noted material is there ... each of the dozen or so pages I checked in the 7th edition maps to the same page in the 8th edition, even up into the page 600's. So if you are not buying this for a class, you might consider buying the 7th edition as it should be cheaper. I don't know what updated information you'd be losing out on, though.

Becker World of the Cell strikes a perfect balance for my Cell biology course. It has basic information for students who are 2-3 years removed from Intro Biology who need to review, yet is challenging to those who are strong in chemistry. Experiments leading to our current knowledge are presented without being overly technical. The references at the ends of chapters ishelful for delving into a bit more depth for those students who want to know more about the experiments. Finally, the questions at the end of the chapters have a nice variety, from recall to analytically challenging.

Many of my students also take biochemistry. They report this text gives them clarification on some topics inthat course, particularly protein structure, enzymology, and the energetics of membrane transport.

For instructors, my major complaint has to do with the test bank. Most test items are way too elementary. I find it useless.

Sinauer Associates and W.H. Freeman are proud to introduce Principles of Life. Written in the spirit of the reform movement that is reinvigorating the introductory majors course, Principles of Life cuts through the thicket of excessive detail and factual minutiae to focus on what matters most in the study of biology today. Students explore the most essential biological ideas and information in the context of the field’s defining experiments, and are actively engaged in analyzing research data. The result is a textbook that is hundreds of pages shorter (and significantly less expensive) than the current majors introductory books.

Principles of Life PDF

Even though I'm not a biology major, I find myself enthralled by biological studies. And so when I enrolled in my biology course, I found out that my class would be using this book (Hillis' Principles of Life) rather than the Campbell Biology text, and I was rather surprised. I found this text to be excruciatingly inferior to the Campbell's, and the only mildly good aspect that I could think of would have to be the diagrams and pictures if one could be bothered to look at. The text itself are ridiculously brief, and do not explain very well about each topic matter.

I didn't purchase the actual book from Amazon, but rather I bought the access to Bioportal through the publisher's website, and it included the ebook with the Bioportal access. It is a horrible experience having to navigate through the pages trying to find the one paragraph to answer the question for the assignments (I ended up googling most of them to no avail due to the book's uselessness), and if you try to search using the find feature, you would still be stuck at square one!

The other biology classes at UT (which funny enough, is where Hillis is from) all use the Campbell text, but I chose my professor because I saw that people reviewed her as being a good teacher, but that is ruined by her insistence that we be the first class to try out this book. I had purchase the 3rd edition of Campbell's Biology (for a meager $10 at Half-Price) to make sure that I don't have to blunder my through this horrible book for the rest of the year.
By disatisfiedcollegestudent
I'm taking BSC 2010 at the University of Florida, and unfortunately, this textbook replaced the Campbell Biology textbook this year. I knew coming in that the course will be interesting, and fairly easy for me because I took AP Biology in High School and I still remember a fair number of the concepts. The one factor that I forgot to take into account is the possibility that we'd have a terrible textbook. There are a couple of reasons why this textbook is horrible for anyone who wants to learn about Biology; first, none of the concepts are explained very clearly. Second, the concepts aren't explained in enough detail. This forms the basis of a textbook that is too convoluted to actually be of any help for the BioPortal quizzes (which, if you're taking this course at UF, will be extremely annoying...trust me). Basically, it seems like the authors just wanted to throw together a Biology textbook for the heck of it, and see how much money they could make before people realized that there was a superior alternative (the Campbell textbook). I give this textbook 2 stars simply because it's about Biology.
